Donna Stellhorn: Planting Seeds for Better Health

So many of us these days are on a quest for better health.  I’ve seen my own journey from a white flour, white sugar diet to sprouted grain and raw organic honey (from special New Zealand bees who are tucked each night into little tiny beds between organic cotton sheets). The results have been miraculous.  We are all doing what we can to find wholesome food and clean water, and our quest for health includes our environment too.

Much of traditional Feng Shui is about living in harmony with the land.  Instead of just tossing the seeds on the ground and hoping for the best the farmer adjusted the environment for the seeds by planting in good soil, that had good sunlight, not too much wind and plenty of water and from this he got better results.  We too can adjust our home and work place environments to support us rather than just waiting to see what happens.

Just as the farmer would prepare his soil by removing rocks, weeds and debris we need to purge the clutter that has built up over the last years.  Here the farmer has it easier, he never looks at a rock and says “I had better keep this because I may need it some day”.  He knows he can always get more rocks.  But for us we need to overcome that desire to hold on to things just because they may be useful some day.  The weight of these things is holding us back.  We are trying to move forward while dragging our past along, and it’s exhausting.  Time to purge.  I don’t say this lightly, I have the same stacks of accumulations like you do.  And I struggle with the guilt (I never should have bought this), the regret (I didn’t get around to doing this project), the fear (I may need this someday) but to move forward we have to lighten the load.

When I get really stuck, digging in my heels and holding on very tightly I employ a little Feng Shui:

  • I place the items that I’m not sure I can part with in a box and seal it.
  • On the outside of the box I write what’s inside and I write the date.
  • Then I place the box in the garage or basement and I sprinkle it with sea salt (salt removes energy and attachments).
  • If I haven’t opened the box in 90 days then I don’t need the items and I can donate the entire box to the local charity.
And there is a handy list on the side of the box that I can copy for the donation record.

The farmer would add nutrients to the soil and so we should add items to our environment that really nurture us.

  • You should be sleeping in a comfortable bed where you can sleep soundly.
  • You should have a comfortable place to sit in the house, a place where you can think and read and dream.
  • You should have a peaceful place to eat where you can enjoy each bite and assimilate the nutrients.
  • And you should have an effective place to work (perhaps one not decorated in yellow sticky notes).

Now you may not be able to buy your dream bed or the perfect office furniture at this time, but consider how to make it a good place for you with what you have.

Just as the  farmer would make sure that the soil would have sun we need some fresh air from time to time too.  In many places, here in Phoenix in particular, we go from our air conditioned houses to our air conditioned cars into our air conditioned offices.  And sometimes for months we don’t really get to breath the air.  So for at least for a few minutes each day sit out on the porch or go take a walk and breath deeply.  Allow the old air out of your lungs and fill them with new air and oxygen.

The farmer would make sure that water is available and so too do we need our water.  Drink plenty of water each day.  All those other drinks; soda, coffee, tea, energy drinks are not water, they are considered by your body to be food.  Only water is seen by your body as water.

Finally, after everything is in place, the farmer can plant the seeds.  For us it means that when we have cleared a little space in the house of some clutter, made a comfortable spot for ourselves to sit or eat or sleep, when we give our bodies air and water then we can plant our own seeds of the future and have confidence that they will grow and flourish. Some seed ideas are below.

The prosperity seed: Take a clear quartz crystal in both hands and sit for a minute.  You may feel your hands itching or tingling or you may feel nothing at all.  Picture a door and picture yourself opening the door.  And there before you is a person handing you money.  Feel for a moment how good that feels and then place the crystal on a table or shelf by your front door.  Repeat this daily for seven days.

The health seed: Remove any notes you have on your bathroom mirror and replace them with one that says “I want to want to exercise”.  That’s not a typo. This is an affirmation about wanting to exercise.  Leave the note there a week and then replace it with “I want to enjoy fruits and vegetables”.  And after a week of that put up the final affirmation, “I want to eat consciously”.  This series of affirmations has been enormously effective with my clients.

The relationship seed for new relationship: Take a map of the world (you can print one off the computer if you don’t have an atlas).  Rub your hands together until they are warm, this is you generating energy.  Place your hands on the map and feel the energy going out to the whole world.  Then take a deep breath and feel the right person coming towards you pulled in by your breath and reaching their own hands to touch yours.  Then place the map in the Helpful People section of the house (inside the house to the right of the front door when you are entering the house).

The world healing seed: If you have concern about the world and your own needs are generally met and you have a bit of energy to spare you can send that energy out to help heal the world.  If your own needs are not met, if you have piles of bills, big health concerns, no one to love and support you then it is important that you take care of those things first.  You must be whole to effectively send healing to the world otherwise you will just deplete yourself.  Take a white candle to represent energy.  And find a place in the house where you feel happy.  Light the candle and allow your energy to go through the flame of the candle to be used where it is most needed (or you can direct it to a specific problem).  As the flame of the candle dances you will know that your energy is being sent.
